Mt. Garfield & Bookcliff TRAILS
This vast high desert offers adrenaline-filled roller coaster style looping hilltops that will amaze even the most fearless of your crowd. Exploring the North Desert trails will suit skills of all different levels of riding, from beginner to extreme trails.

These trails take you to view some of the most breathtaking views within the Grand Valley; Mt. Garfield, The Book Cliffs, and Colorado National Monument and The Grand Mesa.
From small roller hills to sandy wash crevasses, you will get to experience some of the steepest trails you could image.  This location is our signature ride which offers you the fastest way to enjoy your Polaris RZR! Located within minutes from checking-in.

Mount Garfield is a 3.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Palisade, Colorado that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash.

All Trails describes this as a great trail for “terrific views, wild horses, and a short gnarly climb/scramble up to the top to overlook Grand Junction. This trail is steep and can get hot on summer afternoons, depending on the time of year you may want to do this trail in the morning.”

Wikipedia describes Mt. Garfield as the highest point of the Book Cliffs, north of Grand Junction, and overlooking the town of Palisade. Two classic hiking trails ascend the mountain. The mountain was named after President James Garfield a year after Garfield’s death.

The Book Cliffs are a series of desert mountains and cliffs in western Colorado and eastern Utah, in the western United States. They are so named because the cliffs of Cretaceous sandstone that cap many of the south-facing buttes appear similar to a shelf of books.

Stretching nearly 200 miles from east to west, the Book Cliffs begin where the Colorado River descends south through De Beque Canyon into the Grand Valley (near Palisade, Colorado) to Price Canyon (near Helper, Utah). The Book Cliffs appear mostly along the southern and western edge of the Tavaputs Plateau. The cliffs are largely composed of sedimentary materials. The Book Cliffs are within the Colorado Plateau geologic province.

In the Colorado stretch of the Book Cliffs, abandoned coal mines are present, as significant coal resources were present in the region. These mines are now generally capped for safety, but several fatalities of recreational hikers have occurred at these mines since 1989 (due to lack of oxygen/CO2 gas inhalation).[2] In some places, “wild” horses can be found in the Book Cliffs, for example (in 2008), a band of four was spotted near the abandoned Gearhart coal mine in Mesa County, Colorado.

What to Bring
Consider the weather forecast when planning your trail rides.  Dry and hot weather with afternoon thunderstorms are quite common, but a careful, properly prepared rider(s) will enjoy the experience regardless of the weather.  Check the weather daily and dress appropriately. Protect your head, eyes, and extremities. Let someone know your travel plans and schedule. Here are a few common items that are often carried along as a part of an enjoyable trail ride.

  • Water, nutritional drinks, etc.  Think hydration.
  • Container with food and snacks.  Refresh your energy.
  • Light coat, hat, sunscreen.
  • Eye protection – goggles, glasses, etc.
  • Helmets.  Protect your noggin.
  • Tie downs.  Leave no trace.
  • Hiking/outdoor/closed-toe shoes.  Get out & check things out.
  • Maps & books.  Know where you are.
  • Electronics – phone, camera, GPS, etc.
